The West University Church of Christ is a congregation of believers that is a part of a fellowship of some one million believers meeting in thirteen thousand congregations across the United States. The worldwide fellowship of Churches of Christ includes at least another million more believers in other countries.
Theologically, the Churches of Christ desire to emulate the faith, doctrine, worship and life of the ideal church portrayed in the New Testament Scriptures of the Holy Bible. In everything, we believe and practice we want to follow the teachings of Jesus and his apostles.
Historically, the Churches of Christ originated as a result of a reform movement among Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist churches in the early 1800’s. At that time, denominations were so divided and sub-divided that strict lines of fellowship were drawn based on humanly-devised creeds and interpretations. In the late 1790s and early 1800’s, people began to hunger for unity among all believers in Christ based on a return to the Scriptures. Ministers like James O’Kelly of North Carolina, Thomas and Alexander Campbell of Bethany, West Virginia, Barton W. Stone, John Mulkey and Rice Haggard of Kentucky, and Walter Scott of Ohio lead efforts for believers to call themselves simply “Christians” and to unify for the purpose of world evangelism. Today’s Churches of Christ resulted from this American Restoration Movement, as it is known.
